For expat families, choosing a school is often the first decision to make, even before choosing a home. Greater Tunis offers several international options, mainly in the northern suburbs and around Les Berges du Lac.
The main curricula available
French curriculum
Schools in the AEFE network (Agency for French Education Abroad), such as the Lycée Pierre Mendès France in Tunis and the Lycée Gustave Flaubert in La Marsa, follow the French national curriculum from primary school to the baccalauréat. Places are in high demand and admission priorities apply.
American curriculum
The American Cooperative School of Tunis (ACST) offers an English-language programme based on the American system, popular with international families and diplomatic staff.
British curriculum
The British International School of Tunis (BIST) follows the British curriculum, with English as the language of instruction.
Other private bilingual and international schools complete the offer, as well as kindergartens with French, English or bilingual programmes.
Tuition fees
Fees vary widely from one school and one grade to another. On top of annual tuition, budget for registration or entrance fees, transport, canteen, uniforms and extracurricular activities. Always ask the school for its current fee schedule, and check what your company’s mobility policy covers.
Enrolment timeline
- The school year runs from September to June.
- Applications for September usually open several months in advance, often at the beginning of the calendar year, and the most popular schools can have waiting lists.
- Mid-year admissions are possible, subject to available places.
- Expect to provide previous school reports, certificates, identity documents and vaccination records; some schools also hold an entrance assessment or interview.
Our advice
- Contact schools as soon as the assignment is confirmed, even before arriving in Tunisia.
- Visit the short-listed schools with your children whenever possible.
- Choose your neighbourhood once the school is confirmed, to limit daily journeys.
